Happy Pikachus Bother a Sleeping Snorlax in an Adorable New Game

pikachu-snorlax-game

You know how it is in the summer. It’s hot. The sun is shining. You go out to the hammock in the backyard with a cold drink, a tube of sunscreen, and a glossy magazine, and just when you’re about to lie down and take a nap, a dozen Pikachus come out of nowhere and knock you right out of the hammock.

Like I said, you know how it is in summer.

Thank you, Mr. Iwata.

iwata smile

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata passed away this weekend at the young age of 55 due to a bile duct growth. Iwata’s work with Nintendo was impressive to say the least, and his sudden passing has caused many to reflect back on his immense contributions to the world of video games. He had said that he was, in his heart, a gamer. But even if he hadn’t said this, it was obvious in his work and in his enthusiasm.

Iwata worked on titles and franchises that are loved by so many people around the world and that touched many of us so deeply, we feel that these games are forever a part of who we have become. In a sense, his spirit lives on in these games and in our own hearts. And we can in turn pass this on into our own creations.

Much has already been said about Mr. Iwata as fans of all ages have struggled to put into words and images feelings that were previously only kept inside. We will always remember his smile and his excitement.

Though we are devastated by the news of his passing, we are grateful to have gotten to share this planet with him, if only for a short while. Thank you, Mr. Iwata.

Say hello to the long-lost ‘Nintendo Play Station’ prototype

The Nintendo Play Station worked with both CD and cartridge games.

The Nintendo Play Station worked with both CD and cartridge games.

Long before the PlayStation brand we know today existed, Nintendo and Sony were actually partners for a brief period of time. Surprisingly, and against all odds, the hybrid Super Nintendo Entertainment System (or SNES) CD console forged out of that brief agreement has finally surfaced approximately 27 years later.

Super Mario Maker Includes 100 Pre-Made Levels

mario-maker-boss-stack

Super Mario Maker is a new game that asks what the world would look like with an infinite supply of Mario levels. A working Internet connection ensures access to an ever-expanding amount of content as players build, edit, and share new Mario stages with people from around the world.

However, DIY game designers can be sadistic jerks, so Nintendo is not about to leave the community to its own devices. The developer has revealed that the disc will ship with 100 pre-made stages that can be played immediately, no Internet connection required.

Why Reggie Fils-Aime is Right when He Says VR Isn’t Fun

Oculus-Rift-headset

Between Project Morpheus, the Oculus Rift, and the HoloLens, virtual and augmented reality has never been more tangible than it was at E3 2015. The excitement is understandable. Virtual reality has been the stuff of science fiction for decades, and it finally seems as if the real world is catching up to our imaginations.

However, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime seemed determined to ruin the party in an interview with Polygon.

Man Spends Six Years Crocheting Giant Super Mario Bros. Map

mario-tapestry-full

When it comes to fan art, most of us take the path of least resistance, whether that’s tumblr, Deviant Art, or the drawings of Imperator Furiosa circulating on Twitter. The artists at comic conventions are always selling amazing prints, while the truly devoted can seek out commissions and custom artwork. Whatever the case, it’s not too difficult to find a relatively inexpensive way to display your favorite games at home.

Thankfully, Kjetil Nordin is not like the rest of us. Not one to be satisfied with a photocopied print of his beloved Super Mario Bros. 3, the Norwegian computer programmer spent six and a half years crocheting a (roughly) 7×6 ft. tapestry of the World 1 map from the NES classic. It took him over 800 hours and countless balls of yarn to complete the tapestry, which will soon be hanging on his wall once he can figure out a way to do so without destroying it.

Andross declares war in this limited-run Star Fox shirt

War Declaration

ShirtPunch is celebrating E3 week by kicking it off with this fantastic Star Fox-inspired design, “War Declaration,” from SoleVision. This might the only T-shirt the world ever sees me in from here on out, because I am picking up multiples. I’ve always considered going the Albert Einstein/Steve Jobs route of just having one outfit so I don’t have to worry each day about what to wear, or worry about wearing the same thing out in public twice, and this is my first step toward that. So thank you, SoleVision.
